Why did iFi select -12dB and -24dB?
Last Updated 2 years ago

Question: What was the reasoning behind making the attenuation amounts -12 dB and -24 dB?

Answer: Given the wide range headphone/IEM sensitivities (e.g. from 140dB/V - a 30dB difference), we felt that as much attenuation as 24dB was needed for the most sensitive headphones. Using a 2-position switch breaks this in halve for less sensitive headphones, so 12/24dB to allow for a compact and affordable product.

Sure, we could have used a 48 position switch from ALPS and made the adjustment in 48 0.5dB steps, but the resulting device would dwarf many headphone amplifiers and smartphones in size and would have to retail at several 100 USD, so we felt that such a solution was not terribly useful to most people.
